This is a video on how to construct a Debris Hut. The hut is widely used in survival situations, but it could also be used as a storage facility by campers. Can defianately be put together in under an hour, anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong. It is only advised to build such a hut if the correct materials are nearby(leaves, sticks, branches,). You could use equipment to help further the hut, eg rope can be used to attach the main frame and the use of an axe means you dont have to go looking for specific sized sticks. Part 1.
A medium-sized backpack will often be your most used pack. For carrying daypack loads, tactical loads, travel gear, and perhaps a very light overnight load the Kelty Redwing is one of the best. It is Nutnfancys reference backpack in this this category (2000-3500 cubic inches, internal frame). Also notable is the excellent GoLite Continuum backpack also discussed. While these designs have been updated or discontinued, a review of their features can equip you with some shopping tips for similarly capable daypacks. The Redwing is a long-enduring design that is constantly being updated by Kelty and remains popular for good reasons: convenient panel loading, strong zippers and fabric, comfortable suspension, hydration compatible, behind-pocket (flow-thru) item carry, subdued colors, mesh backpanel, pefect pocket designs, and outstanding durability. Few packs match all these features although some may be lighter. One such pack was the GoLite Continuum (discontinued, look for similar models). While lacking convenient panel loading, this Continuum does save a pound in carry weight while still offering some waterproof pockets, good ventilation, side item carry (like fishing poles, rifles), mesh pockets, good (albeit spartan) suspension, hydration pouch, and a great OD color. Its lightweight fabric however is not as durable in hard use as is often the case with lightweight offerings (technology may change this in the future). But for all-around, tough, brush busting use, its the …

Oftentimes when shopping we are so focused on certain name brands that we overlook the offerings of other companies. By happy accident I stumbled upon one of REI’s excellent backpacks: The Lookout. Extremely well-designed and low-profile, the Lookout fits most of my criteria for the perfect carry-on travel backpack; all for a great price as well. In this two-part series I discuss some of the features of this model (and the current model) of the Lookout with some comparisons to other packs I have reviewed. My review model of the Lookout features: – High-density polyethylene (HDPE) framesheet and a single aluminum stay (current model is also padded with mesh covered foam padding for softer/grippier support) – Panel-Loading design – Main compartment capacity of 40 liters (2441 cubic inches) in the Medium Size Pack (shown in review), 42 liters (2562 cubic inches) in the Large Size Pack – Front pocket with zippered compartment on inner flap – Soft cloth lined top stash pocket for fragile items like sunglasses (current model has larger pocket with bigger opening) – 2 side stretch-cloth/mesh pockets (current model uses regular mesh pockets) – 2 low-profile, expandable side pockets – 2 valuables pockets on the waistbelt (current model has a single, larger, zippered mesh pocket on right side of waist belt) – 2 ports for either right or left-handed hydration pouch use – Bottom compression straps can be used to also strap on gear such as sleeping bag/bedroll/etc. – Low-profile …

Excuse the shaky camera. I didn’t think it would be that bad. To save power I turned off the display and had to rely on my not-so-steady hand. This was the road trip part. As I didn’t have time to light the fire considering the dampness, I wanted to test Jute Twine plus Vaseline (I’m not sure, but it seems that it’s called something like petroleum jelly in anglophonic countries…), and light it with my firesteel to see if this could breing 250ml of water to a boil (for my coffee). The main aim of this was to get ideas for versatility of the Jute Twine as tinder. Conclusion is : it’s easier to light vaselined Jute Twine than Waxed Jute Twine with a firesteel. With both you can build a tindernest that are pretty waterresistant, it’s easier to tighten a knot on waxed twine than vaselined one. Vaselined Jute Twine is easier to separate for tindernest making than wax soaked twine. I haven’t compared the burning time of both in the same fashion: the waxed one was fluffed, the vaseline one was still tight and worked as a wick. In a cold temperature fire kit, I’d go for the Vaseline Jute Twine (easily fluffed, takes the first spark you strike, vaseline can be used as lipbalm, can easily be used as a wick with one firesteel strike and no specific preparation.

On September 8, 2006, Bradley Beesley and Sarah Price screened their documentary, Summercamp!, at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Flaming Lips contributed most of the music on the films’ soundtrack, and the screening was planned to coincide with the band’s tour schedule so that they could attend the screening and see the film. The film screening was followed by an after-party at Gabby’s, a bar on Bloor St. After a summer camp-style sing-a-long led by members of the film’s cast and crew, and complete with a campfire and the passing around of lyric sheets, the Flaming Lips took the makeshift stage outside behind the bar and treated party-goers to a 3-song acoustic performance. To meet YouTube’s requirements, the performance has been cut into four parts: 1. Summercamp! after-party introduction 2. Jesus and the Spider Are In My Sleeping Bag Tonight. 3. Buggin’ 4. Plastic Jesus Apologies for the shoddy camerawork. Many thanks to Rani for telling me about the film, to Bradley for getting me into the party, and to the Lips for the show. I was definitely a happy camper that night.
