Summer is here – outdoor venues’ event calendars are looking plump! Everyone is gearing up for concert picnics, outdoor plays, and summer concerts – even restaurants and eateries are offering gourmet picnic baskets to take to these events. Get your hats, umbrellas, beach chairs, and picnic blankets ready!
One particular event that I look forward to this summer is the California Philharmonic’s Festival on the Green. It’s held at the Los Angeles Arboretum every summer in succeeding weekends. Each performance features a theme (Classics, Dance, and Movie themes to name a few). This event started in 1997 – a vision of Maestro Vener. The event came a reality with the help community leaders and the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department. This year is definitely special as Festival on the Green is celebrating its 10th year.
There are many events happening in other parts of the country – if you are a big literary fan, the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR is the event for you. Founded in 1935, this Tony Award Winning event is among the oldest theatre events in the country. Started by a teacher from South Oregon Normal School, Angus L. Bowmer, the festival was officially launched on July 2, 1935. Bowmer’s idea is to create a festival in conjunction with the city’s Fourth of July celebration. In 2001, the 10 millionth ticket holder was welcome. This festival is definitely one to check out!
An event that has been gaining worldwide notoriety is the Burning Man Project. Founded by Larry Harvey and Jerry James in 1986, it started as an annual fire party at Baker Beach in San Francisco. This event began with a humble group of friends and now grew to a community of 25,000 people. There are different descriptions of this event. . . Some say it’s Art festival, some would describe it as music festival, and others a social experiment. It is probably a combination of all these – it seems the Burning Man Project is what you want it to be or how you experience it to be. The only way to find out is to go there yourself!
Whatever you are interest in; there is a summer event for you. There’s music, arts, theatre, culinary, and many more. Definitely plan ahead and get your tickets early, as most of the very popular events sell out months in advanced. Be sure to check out the events websites to see any restrictions (such as age, alcohol, transportation, etc. ), if any.
To see a calendar of events happening this summer – music, concerts, festivals, theatre, culinary – visit The WhereWhen Project: http://www. thewherewhenproject. com. Calendar access is free with no registration required. . . And if you have an event to promote, posting events are free as well.

Winter can pose many hazards to people that must leave the confines of home and venture out into icy conditions on roadways and into cold weather temperatures that could make shopping almost impossible. To make winter outdoors shopping more bearable, many townspeople will go outdoors shopping for salt spreaders that will keep the roadways near their home free of ice. Some town governments might go winter outdoors shopping and buy snow plows to clear the roadways everywhere.
People that live in areas where snow falls most of the year will get quite accustomed to going winter outdoors shopping even if it is summer or springtime. The items that they are intent on buying are those that will winterize the house and the items that they will be intent on buying are the ones that are designed to keep the warm air inside the home during winter, and ones that keep the cold inside the house during the summer. People will purchase weather stripping to keep drafts out of any room in the house at all times of the year.
People who live in rugged terrain areas need to have certain essentials in the car when they leave the house after a deep snowfall. If the automobile has been outside for a while, there is a good possibility that the electronic jump starter bought on an winter outdoors shopping trip will come in very handy when the automobile owner tries to crank it up and leave the driveway to get more shopping done before the Christmas holiday arrive.
Some winter outdoor shopping trips will be earmarked for buying things that will keep the family warm and safe, should the car break down on an isolated roadway. Some engines might not freeze up if the automobile owner had thought ahead and purchased an engine heater when the car was purchased many years before. Even if the automobile did break down, the heated cushions on the car seats could make things seem quite cozy until help arrives in the knick of time.
The automobile is a great asset to own but some things that are purchased on winter outdoor shopping expeditions will make owning it even more enjoyable. People can find great bargains on ski racks at internet retail sites and have enough money left over to make the ski resort reservations into two rooms or more. The wintertime provides sports enthusiasts with many opportunities to own gear that makes playing in the snow a brand new experience each year.
People that love playing in the snow might use the outdoor shopping sales to buy snowmobiles, snowboards and snow shoes to keep out the chill. Every snowmobile will have its own cover because the winter outdoor sales priced them with great discounts. A recreational vehicle owner might use the sales ads in winter to buy RV covers and a new set of windshield wiper blades. These items are all essential to vehicles be ready for the road when the idea of a ski trip happens one weekend.

Having nothing in common with your children when it comes to the things we consider as fun activities is not too uncommon. However, if we as parents can make a good effort to try to compromise a little bit, perhaps you can have fun with your kids doing certain outdoor activities. In this case specifically, we will be talking about motor sports ideas for families.
If you live in a more rural or country area, your kids may long to do some outdoor activities. Many older kids in my area love motor sports.
Dirt Biking
Riding dirt bikes off road can be extremely fun. However, this activity can also be extremely dangerous if you try to do stunts or ride in dangerous areas. However, with the proper protective gear and the knowledge and skills to operate a dirt bike safely, dirt biking can be awesome for the whole family.
I have even seen some mothers get on dirt bikes and ride around the open fields joining their husbands and children. This may seem like such an unconventional activity for families to do, but it is not too uncommon out in the country.
Four Wheeling
Four-wheeled ATVs are also popular to ride. Whether you are in the mountains or at the beach, four-wheelers are a hit with the kids and it is much safer to ride around than dirt bikes. I have seen, although it is not entirely recommended, children as young as eight years old operating four-wheelers and toting around a few kids with them.
As long as no stunts or tricks are attempted with the children, four-wheelers are fairly safe with proper use and the right protective gear.
Pocket Bikes
Have you ever seen kids riding around those miniature-sized motor bikes all over the place? Well, pocket bikes have become popular among teenagers and younger adults in these past few years. Pocket bikes are made both for the road and for off-road also. It is a trip to watch and an even bigger trip to ride!
Well, these are some of the motor sports the kids are interested in these days. If you do not feel like you would want to do any of these, maybe you can plan a picnic day where you can supervise the riding of one of these vehicles. It is always a good idea to get involved with the activities your kids are doing instead of letting them go off on their own.

In the modern family entertainment consists of glowing screens. The computer, video games, cell phones, and television are the things that entertain our families. These are all great technologies, but most of them are solitary activities. Game nights have always been a go to family get together, but why not do something special? A family camping vacation could be just what you need. Spending time together in a tent out in the middle of the woods can be a lot of fun. Plus, your kid’s cell phone won’t get reception, so you’ll get uninterrupted conversation.
Start your family camping vacation by picking the right place to go. National forests and parks will often have areas reserved for camping. Call ahead and ask where to go and how much it will cost. When you get there the attendant will usually give you a map to the reserved spot to put your tent. National forests and parks have hiking trails that you can take your family on during your vacation. There are also sometimes visitor centers that give have fun and informative displays about the park. These forests parks are also easy to find, because they have brochures at tourist places and sometimes sporting goods stores.
Packing all of the right equipment and supplies will ensure more time to have fun. Make sure everyone has their own pack with extra clothes and toiletries. There should be a sealable container filled with non perishable food. Pick out a camping tent that will be big enough to fit all your sleeping bags and/or air mattresses. Camping stores offer tent sizes that are perfect for family camping vacations. If you don’t get cell phone reception, maybe it would be wise to pack a 2-way radio with your first aid supplies.
Entertainment can be just as easily found on a family camping vacation as it is at home. Bring a couple of your family’s favorite board games. You can play them inside your cool tent when it gets too hot outside. There are also several classic camping games you can play. Frisbees and horse shoes are great day time sports. At night there is always story telling around the camp fire. You can also have a contest to see who can find the most constellations. With some s’mores and good music, you know you will be sure to have a safe, fun and memorable weekend vacation.

Is it time to build that shed you’ve always talked about? Are your backyard toys and paraphernalia multiplying like mushrooms and becoming an eyesore for your neighbors?Whether you decide to assemble a precut kit or choose a backyard shed plan from any number of sales locations, the addition of this small structure will definitely add value to your home. One important detail to factor in is the types of items you will be using the shed for. Will it be for large riding lawnmowers (which may need a larger unit with a garage door-style opening and a ramp), or a collection of gear such as weed whackers, rakes, or other lengthy tools?A shed can also be used by gardening enthusiasts as a place to do planting preparation, and store the variety of tools needed to create a spectacular, colorful yard that is the talk of the neighborhood. Backyard sheds can also be turned into a getaway room to relax and unwind, or write the next great American novel. There are a number decisions to make when choosing the style of your storage shed. Here are a few tips before you start:1. Buy a good set of plans (or a kit) that include both the drawings and step-by-step instructions so the building process is clear. 2. Check with local zoning codes to see if you need a permit to build. Even a small shed could cause major headaches if it breaks the rules. 3. Be absolutely sure where you want the shed, and why you need it there. If it is closer to the house, would the tools be put away more often? Or do you want it out of sight?4. Ensure the ground is level. This may require laying gravel or using a backhoe to create a flat surface. If this is not done, the entire structure could lean, causing problems in the future. 5. Determine what type of things you will be storing in the shed. Will you need hooks for heavy items? Should the floor be concrete or would wood suffice?6. What type of foundation will you use? A concrete foundation will ensure a longer life for the building. If you choose a wood post foundation, use concrete for the base around the posts to protect the wood from frost or moisture. 7. If you are using wood for any part of the shed, from foundation to roof trusses, use treated wood to avoid rot and wood-eating insects. If your budget will allow, choose cedar as it is naturally the most durable product. Pressure-treated wood will also protect the shed from drastically changing climates.
