The Kelty Gunnison 2 series out-performs its price level and as proven in this actual high altitude test, it can be pressed into mountaineering service when needed. Its 92″x58″ floor area and 40″ height provides its users with 37 sq ft (+10 sq ft vestibule) of living area (specs subject to change of course). I prefer rectangular floor plans for their roominess and simplicity and Gunnisons have it. This gives excellent livability for one dude or dudette plus dog; two adults will find it a tight fit. Factory weight is listed around 5 lbs 9 oz but my upgraded Kely Gunnison 2 weighs in at actual pack weight of 6 lbs 11 oz. These upgrades include a cut and fitted footprint (from plastic blue tarp) and 8 MSR GroundHog tent stakes (superior to the stock aluminum ones). Expect fast pitching due to color-coded tent fly and clip pole attachments. Some sagginess in the sidewalls may be noted in the design, a characteristic of two-pole designs. The polyester rain fly is excellent, providing double vestibules on each of the zippered, mesh entry doors. The crisscrossing DAC aluminum two pole design is common and some noodly-ness should be expected but most will find it adequately strong. But when properly guyed out, extra rigidity is achieved and the tent Gunnison will ride out moderate winds well (angled rain fly sheds wind well too). Velcro pole attachments for fly-to-poles are provided. Poles are DAC 7000 series aluminum. Mesh integration is excellent (as shown) and achieves good …

A medium-sized backpack will often be your most used pack. For carrying daypack loads, tactical loads, travel gear, and perhaps a very light overnight load the Kelty Redwing is one of the best. It is Nutnfancys reference backpack in this this category (2000-3500 cubic inches, internal frame). Also notable is the excellent GoLite Continuum backpack also discussed. While these designs have been updated or discontinued, a review of their features can equip you with some shopping tips for similarly capable daypacks. The Redwing is a long-enduring design that is constantly being updated by Kelty and remains popular for good reasons: convenient panel loading, strong zippers and fabric, comfortable suspension, hydration compatible, behind-pocket (flow-thru) item carry, subdued colors, mesh backpanel, pefect pocket designs, and outstanding durability. Few packs match all these features although some may be lighter. One such pack was the GoLite Continuum (discontinued, look for similar models). While lacking convenient panel loading, this Continuum does save a pound in carry weight while still offering some waterproof pockets, good ventilation, side item carry (like fishing poles, rifles), mesh pockets, good (albeit spartan) suspension, hydration pouch, and a great OD color. Its lightweight fabric however is not as durable in hard use as is often the case with lightweight offerings (technology may change this in the future). But for all-around, tough, brush busting use, its the …

PART 2 of 3: An external frame pack will serve most backpackers needs. In fact its usually the best choice vs an internal frame pack despite what many biased salesman and outdoor magazines promote. Thanks to such disinformation, the frame pack is often thought of as a old-fashioned and outdated packing option and the shelves of todays outdoor stores reflect that misguided philosophy. Large frame packs, carrying around 5000 cubic inches, are hard to find and usually have to be ordered off the Internet, if you can find one. Thats too bad because the large frame pack is indeed problem solver for extended trips. Nutnfancys reference large frame backpack is the outstanding Kelty Super Tioga, proven on many an expedition into the high country. Sadly its been superceded by subsequent models (however Tiogas are still available under different nomenclatures) but a review of its features in this three part series could help perspective pack buyers to home in on similarly equipped frame packs. And a pack like this is usually necessary to accommodate large amounts of gear needed for 5 day plus trips (unless minimalist gear is carried). It has lots of advantages over an internal frame pack: lashing capability to frame for all kinds of gear, easier to pack, compartmentalization and pockets aid organization and proper weight distribution, pockets with with a flow-thru back will secure long items (like guns, fishing poles, paddles, saws, etc), excellent ventilation behind back, rigidity …

I stuffed some camping gear into some bike panniers and headed out for a weekend outing. Pedaled about 85 miles. It was kinda fun carrying everything you need for a few nights out under the stars and getting there literally on your own power.
I brought too many gadgets. I opted to bring my 2 person tent so that I could bring my gear inside the tent with me to protect it from the elements. Good thing since it rained the next morning. The drizzle on the tent fly is very soothing.
I can’t say enough good things about the MSR. Although one complaint I have is that the zipper on the open doors drag on the ground and can let dirt get caught in the zippers and tracked into your tent if not careful.
I’m going to bring a little less gear and try out the Big Agnes Seedhouse SL1 next time.
