I made my underquilt from a Wallmart sleeping bag. It has a center top zipper with velcro latch which I added a snap to for more strength. It also has side vents that run about 1/3rd of the length on each side to allow for air flow if wanted but can be zipped up. The vents have no see’um netting. The foot end I cut a hole in and added some denim and gave it a draw cord. This allows for the bag to be slid over the hammock, or the draw cord can be closed to use the bag on the ground as as regular one instead. Each end has an understrap that keeps it centered on the hammock. These straps are adjustable so you dont have to woory about them being to tight or breaking. My bug net fits nicely around the bag and doesn’t hinder getting in or out.

My first trip out to play with a few new toys I picked up for the upcomming season. This first camp was just to find out how easy the hammock and tent were to set up and take down as well as test out a couple of other toys I picked up. This is just a first show of the Grand Trunk Ultralight Hammock and SwissGear Eiger tend of which I will be reviewing over the camping and backpacking seasons and I will be submitting my final thoughts on the two items at the end of the summer. So if you are thinking of buying one of these two items for this year or next, keep watching to find out if they hold up to the tests!

When thinking about camping hammocks there are lots of different options out there for you to consider. All of the camping hammocks today are made with high quality nylon fabrics that can endure anything that nature can throw at them. As for styles and personal preference this is where it will depend on your interests.
Most of the camping hammocks that are out there today will do fine for everyday hikers and backpackers, but there are people that like to have their camping hammocks tailored to their own preferences, which is always good to have because you will be the one sleeping in it. It’s better to be comfortable than wake up with a sore back from your camping hammocks. I have found that quality in things of this nature is more important than appearance. But with the new hammocks that have been released by Hennessy there is more to offer in style, durability, and options. These are more of my favorite ones as they allow me being 6′1 to sleep comfortably with extra room and not squeezed up all night struggling to get comfortable as my old one was.
Let’s look at a few of the pros and cons of camping hammocks.
Here are a few of the pros-
-First off you won’t be sleeping on the ground and have some unwanted creatures crawling in your sleeping bag to snuggle up with you, and it will help you avoid the rocky terrain that you could have been laying on. This is also good for nature too because you wont be leaving any trace that you were camping there like if you had to level the ground for a tent or plant stakes.
-Second with good camping hammocks it makes life a lot easier for those who like to hike all throughout the woods and don’t have lots of time and patience to setup a tent every night. The new designs have some of the easiest setups and all you need is two trees and there is an abundance of them in the forest.
-Third they are lightweight and made of high quality material, and when out on the trail every ounce counts so lugging around a bulky and heavy tent and air mattress can make it more difficult the further you are hiking back into the woods.
As far as the Cons go for camping hammocks there aren’t many that are big factors towards making them bad.
Some of the Cons-
-First off if you are camping with a loved one it does make it harder to snuggle up together at night in hammocks. There are two person hammocks but they are more for your backyard.
-And second is if you are afraid of enclosed spaces or claustrophobic, this will make things a lot harder on you as when you wake up in the night in a small dark confined area in your camping hammock. And as always you can be the victim of pranks being hung between trees so you have to watch for that.
With all that said I still love to take my camping hammocks along especially on the clear nights when you can leave the rain fly off and enjoy the nice night time sky.

I think I was tougher when I was kid. Either that or I’ve gotten soft as a middle aged man. When I was younger I loved to go backpacking and camping where we would hike in for miles and there wouldn’t be another camper in sight. We would pitch the tent and unroll our down-filled sleeping bags. When it came time to go to bed I would crawl in and be asleep in minutes. No foam or inflatable pads.
I still love to go camping, but I can’t sleep on the ground anymore. Apparently the ground has gotten harder in the last 35 years since I was a kid. Now that I’m a little older I use an inflatable therma-rest pad that gives me about an inch of cushion. But when it was time to go to bed I would crawl into my sleeping bag and, lo and behold, there would be a rock about the size of my fist right between my shoulder blades. Funny that I hadn’t seen that rock when I was putting up the tent.
Then one day I was perusing an REI catalog looking at the camping gear. I’m like a kid when I’m in the REI store, and I love it when the catalog comes. Anyway, as I was looking through the catalog I came across something that has made me love camping again – a camping hammock! Eureka! No more rocks betwen the shoulder blades. No more sleepless nights camping!
I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of a camping hammock years before. Maybe because I had always camped the same way, and always slept in a tent, and of course you can’t sleep in a hammock and sleep in a tent too, or so I thought! They have camping hammock accessories! Rain-flys and mosquito covers!
If you are a backpacker, or a tailgate camper (which is what I am nowadays) a camping hammock is certainly an option for getting a good night’s sleep. Hammocks are lightweight and portable so packing one along on your next camping trip is easy and convenient.
So what type of hammock is the best for camping? A camping hammock should be portable, lightweight, and easy to hang between a couple of trees. The best camping hammocks are made of high-strength, breathable woven nylon with triple interlocking stitching, and feature marine-grade line with metal snap links so that you can securely attach it to trees or whatever else you can find. I personally think that camping hammocks have some advantages over tents. They cost less, they pack up smaller, they are lighter, they are quicker to set up, and they are far more comfortable than sleeping on the ground.
If you’re thinking about buying a camping hammock here are a few things to keep in mind:
If you bring a hammock with you the next time you go camping I can promise you you’ll get the best night sleep you’ve had camping since you were a kid!

It is likely that everyone has seen camping hammocks before, and gets to play the idea that they are fun and a sure kind of novelty. Portable hammocks are often compared to folding camp chairs when it comes to their use that is to offer comfort when lounging around or dallying some time in campsite, but not associated with necessity. A serious camper frequently does not take much especially when it comes to comfort items. Much of what they would bring is their tent, backpack, food, and several clothing, probably at times include a good reading material such as a book or a magazine or even maybe a harmonica to play during campfires. Backpacking camping hammocks are always considered large and heavy regardless how safe they appear to be. Camping hammocks are not the conventional approach to backpacking, however if realized could be a very helpful part to any backpacking. In a conventional way one can always acquire tents, sleeping bags, or may be a sleeping pad that can be used when resting or snoozing and to keeping warm. Conversely, camping hammocks provide an easy way to keep anyone warm from the ground. This may sound unbelievable but it is true, an all-weather camping hammock is certainly more comfortable than others except for heated sleeping bags. This is mostly due to the air that envelops you rather than the on ground where the heat is rapidly taken away. Camping hammocks allow you to remain warmer by protecting you from the ground and even with much fewer equipment. They are lightweight and thinner than similar sleeping bags, you might even not need a tent or a rain fly except for when it’s really rainy or extremely cold. Camping hammocks can be reasonably utilized in just about any kind of weather especially because you are camped high from the ground and can sleep or relax comfortably. You can always find a suitable camping hammock specifically designed to whatever weather in places you are residing through. Although, there are weather conditions that may be taken into consideration when conventional tents and heated sleeping bags are much better to use. For instance, if you have to contend with snow or an extremely cold weather it is much advisable to utilize a camping tent that can insulate and secure you during this kind of condition. As much as you would like to take along a portable hammock, this may not work out fine. Even so, for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and camping out, a portable hammock can offer many advantages. Besides that is lightweight and portable, it provides a great place to relax and sleep comfortably.
