I’ve been indoor climbing a few times since the new year, and I’ll probably continue to do so enough to warrent buying my own gear.
I thought I’d start with shoes, I might do a few outdoor climbs and maybe some bouldering this summer, but I’d be using them primirely for indoor.
Recommendations? What are you preferences, brand, style, comfort?
I understand that climbing shoes are highly specialized, and what works for someone won’t work for everyone, but I’m just looking to get pointed in the right direction.
Thanks!
I an do an internet search. I’m looking for recommendations from personal experience.
Thank You Wayner!
Wow! you guys have given me a lot to think about. Great stuff!
Going climbing tomorrow night
My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up. I want to get him a gift certificate for an outfitter for clothes, camping/hiking gear, climbing, etc. He lives in Big Bend National Park in Texas, so he is nowhere near any stores. So he does all his gear purchases online.
I have shopped from altrec.com, some friends at backcountry.com. My boyfriend has been on steepandcheap.com, but they don’t have gift certificates.
I tried posting this in outdoor recreation and got zero answers.
So, who’s the best to get a gift certificate from? Thank you!

Bloody great experience though. Day 1… I was picked up outsife my hotel at 6-30 by my guide Joanna, we then went on a tour of Cusco picking up the rest of the party – Four mad Argentinian.womwn, Anna, Patricia, Tatiana and Monica, then we picked up two French Canadians, father and son, Serge and Daniel, then a Peruvian couple,Pily and Christian from Lima, along with Renata a Brazilian girl. We then drove for about 2 and a half hours to the Starting point just outside a town called Allayantayambo (great name). We trecked for about 3-4 hours until we made camp in a field somewhere in Peru … A doddle !!! THEN came day 2. Day 2…. Jeeeez this was a hard day, we trecked from our camp at around 3000 mtrs to the pass at 4200 mtrs and then back down to our second camp in a beautiful valley at around 3600 mtrs – Do not attempt this if your sane… It was a bloody killer. I woke up freezing (shoulda bought a decent sleeping bag) with the rain battering down on the tent, most of my gear …
Just got into rock climbing and I am ready to buy my own gear. What are the beginner essentials for indoor climbing and outdoor bouldering? Also, should I buy high quality expensive gear? I’m on sort of a budget. I really dont know what the difference is between what is good or not and was thinking of buying something cheaper since I’m just starting out.
My wife and I took the intro to iindoor climbing class the other day and we are hooked!
Just looking for any tips from the wise.
On our own we learn that its best to use more leg and less arm when possible. We also found it very helpful to just sit and watch people who know what they are doing.
When is a good time to invest in our own gear. Any good book or video recomendations?
btw, I doubt we will be hitting the outdoor rocks anytime soon if ever.
thx!
