Entry from: Zhongdian, China Entry Title: “Zhongdian…to the edge of the Tibetan world” Entry: “Zhongdian was a blur of snow and stupas. Twenty-two hours of pure cold. We left Lijiang at noon on the 25th and my hands did not stop sweating for 4 hours. We wound our way up impossibly twisting, narrow mountain roads. I use the term “roads” loosely, since what we had was more of a one-lane dirt path, covered with a nice layer of thick ice. No guardrails of course. And the methodology for going around sharp turns? Honk loudly and pray hard that there’s nothing coming in the other direction. I kept saying to myself over and over as my mantra, “It’s ok. The driver doesn’t want to die either.” On several occasions, while staring down into the vast abyss outside my window, I started liberally making promises to myself about making my life utterly wholesome and worthwhile and productive, if only I could continue living it just a little bit longer. We arrived in Zhongdian unscathed, if a bit wobbly-kneed. Despite being only five hours away from Lijiang, we might as well have entered another universe. Kailash kora is a 52km clockwise circumambulation around the mountain along a well-trodden pilgrimage trail that took us a leisurely three days to complete, including an extra acclimatization day near the north face. Many hearty Tibetan pilgrims will complete the kora in one day (~14 hours). Mt. Kailash is regarded as Asia’s holiest mountain and a key figure of the Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and Bon religions. The summit of the mountain itself resembles a pyramid, with the four sides corresponding to the four compass points (NSEW), and it is the source (or near to the source) of four main Asian rivers (Karnali, Sutlej, Indus and Brahmaputra/Yarlung Tsangpo). It is believed that one kora will eliminate all your sins from this lifetime, while 13 koras will allow access to certain higher-status alternative routes along the kora. For the able, 108 koras will give one instant nirvana, scrubbing clean your sins from all lifetimes. Despite our questionable karma, we opted to tackle only one kora for now. Notable is that some Tibetans prostrate themselves fully, walking a few steps then laying on the ground with arms extended (and repeat), reciting a mantra throughout the whole kora, taking some three weeks.
