When you go backpacking the ideal is to carry the least weight possible while maintaining usability of your items. One thing that takes up quite a bit of weight and space in the backpack is your sleeping gear. There are some different options for different sleeping arrangements.
The first is the traditional tent and sleeping bag. These work well and do get the job done. Consider using bivy style tents to save on space if you want to go for the ultralight method of tent camping. Also take a 3 season tent if it’s not cold or winter time to save on weight. Make sure whatever type of tent you get is easy to set up and doesn’t have too many parts that break as it’s likely that cheap parts will be unreliable during a backpacking trip.
Another option is tarp camping. This might mean setting up a tarp on nights that it looks to be rainy but otherwise just camping out on the ground and not worry about the tent. If you do this method it’s good to have some sort of insect netting as they can become a hassle at times without tent walls. If you are comfortable sleeping this way, it can save on space.
One option is hammock camping. There are traditional hammocks that do not protect you from the rain or elements. These work fine but are missing quite a bit. There are hammocks that completely enclose like a tent. The advantage of these is that they are much lighter than a tent and you don’t have to sleep on the ground. One can tie a hammock up anywhere even on a steep hill and camp there for the night making the need for a level camping spot something of the past.
Each of these methods do work. They are worth examining when going out on longer backpacking trips to find what’s right for you.

The greatest challenge of all when backpacking is getting a good quality night’s sleep. By getting enough sleep you will feel refreshed and alive the next morning so that you can take on the day ahead. So what steps can we take to get that perfect night’s sleep? When sleeping outdoors, this is a different experience for many people and there are several considerations to planning your expedition.
1. Where do you plan on going for your backpacking expedition? You will need to consider the climate and anticipated weather conditions. Research for the locations where you will be camping so you will know up front what the expected weather will be like. Be aware of what the temperature will be at nightfall and take the most appropriate sleeping bag for the conditions.
2. Know your budget for your backpacking expedition The main areas where you do not want not want to scrimp on when it comes to backpacking equipment is your tent and sleeping bag. Never buy a cheap tent or cheap sleeping bag else you will be sorry and will make the trip miserable. Always buy the best you can afford but don’t get the bottom of the range just to save money.
3. Knowing how comfortable you really need to be when sleeping We are all different and all sleep differently. But we all know how well we normally sleep at home and what makes us comfortable. For example, some people may suffer from arthritis so may need extra cushioning.
4. Consider the weight of the equipment You might need additional materials to sleep on so consider this when you are looking around to purchase your outdoor gear. A sleeping bag can weigh anything from 1 pound to around 10 pounds so be mindful when looking around for one. A better quality sleeping bag will pay dividends in the long run and will be much easier to carry. Make sure you test out whatever sleep method you buy before you go on your trip. Be sure you are 100% comfortable as it’s difficult to change things when you have commenced your trip.

For a novice backpacker, the larger backpacking camping gear needed is fairly obvious: tent, pack, and sleeping bag. It is always good to follow a backpacking gear review when choosing those items in order to make an informed decision. The smaller items needed in order to have an enjoyable backpacking excursion are the ones most likely to be forgotten by beginner hikers and campers. These smaller items fall into three categories: clothing/wearable’s, kitchen items, and miscellaneous but still essential items.
Clothing and Wearable’s
The focus of this backpacking gear review is weather conditions around 30F. For warmer or colder conditions, clothing choices would vary while the wearables will remain fairly constant.
There are certain items of clothing that should be carried in the pack, even though clothing can be bulky and add to the overall weight of the pack. Clothing carried should not weigh more than fifty ounces altogether in order to keep the pack weight within an enjoyable weight to carry for longer distances.
Extra socks that wick water away are essential for warmth. Rain pants and jackets are also essential, but the material should be breathable. In addition, an insulated vest is essential for keeping the core of the body warm and a neck gaiter or hat is also needed for keeping in the heat.
Again, all of these items can be found in particular in a backpacking gear review to decide on which brand is the one desired. Overall, clothing should be as warm, light and keep the backpacker as dry as possible.
Wearables include the layered and breathable clothing, boots and hat that a hiker normally wears. According to various backpacking gear reviews, boots need to be flexible in the soles for natural movement in the feet, but also give strong ankle support.
The main issue with boots is that they are ultra comfortable and as light as possible. Other wearables are sunglasses, which are essential, not only for the sun but the glare of the sun off of the snow. Sunscreen, a compass, and a whistle are other essential items to have along.
Kitchen Items
The main item, of which there are multiple backpacking gear reviews, is a camping stove. There are many opinions about the type of stove that is best. The overall consensus regarding cooking stoves is that they are light, they are stackable, that they require as little fuel as possible, and that they have the capacity to melt snow at a reasonable rate.
When shopping for stove, keep all of these factors in mind. In addition, any cookware, such as a pot or utensils should also fit neatly inside of each other for more compact packing.
Miscellaneous
Miscellaneous items include the water purification system, of which a backpacker must decide what works best. Boiling water is an option, but is tedious and time consuming. Tablets are another option, but they leave a certain flavor in the water. A water filtration system is heavier than tablets, but does not leave a flavor. Beyond that, a first aid kit and chap stick are beneficial to have on hand at all times.

For a beginner backpacker who is looking for backpacking gear for the first time, there are so many choices out there it is difficult to decide what is the right choice in backpacking gear. Thus, a backpacking gear review that gives the main features that solid backpacking equipment should have. The three biggest items to buy, both in weight and in price, are the tent, sleeping bag, and the backpack, as well as the gear that goes with each one.
Tent
There are many backpacking gear reviews that talk about the specific features that make one tent better than the next, and the local specialty backpacking store employees will also be able to tell all of those special features. The first decision when buying a tent is what size to buy – deciding how many people will normally be sleeping in the tent. Most backpackers will buy a two person tent even if they will be the only one sleeping in it the majority of the time. The reason for this is that it will give them more room for supplies within the tent which allows for a more comfortable sleeping condition.
The next consideration, which makes a difference especially when looking at cheaper tents, is whether the rain fly goes all the way to the ground. In discount backpacking gear, the cheaper tents sometimes have a fly that only reaches about six inches to a foot from the ground, level with the bottom of the screen inside the tent. This does not provide adequate protection from the rain, nor does it give protection to supplies that may need to stay outside the tent, but still need protection from the elements. Finally, make sure the tent stays under the four pound mark, or there will be too much weight in the pack with the other supplies and the hike will not be as enjoyable.
Sleeping Bag
The main issue to consider with a sleeping bag is what the lowest temperature will be at night in the area where the backpacker will be going. Again, other backpacking gear reviews will give the more specific details about different bags, but a sleeping bag is for warmth and comfort at night, so that is the main concern in looking for a bag. In addition, the weight of the bag is important, because along with the tent, it is one of the more cumbersome supplies, so it needs to stay at a minimal weight, definitely under three pounds.
Backpack
Backpacks are probably one of the most disputed items in backpacking gear reviews since every backpacker has her own taste in the style of pack that works best for her. There are two main issues to be concerned about with a backpack: the size of the pack and the fit. The size of the pack is determined by the length of the trip and the weather conditions.
There should also be plenty of tie-downs and pockets for the smaller supplies. The backpack should rest comfortably on the hips so that the bulk of the weight is carried there rather than the shoulders. Again, other backpacking gear reviews or specialty store personnel can give the specific qualities of individual brands of packs.
