Oftentimes when shopping we are so focused on certain name brands that we overlook the offerings of other companies. By happy accident I stumbled upon one of REI’s excellent backpacks: The Lookout. Extremely well-designed and low-profile, the Lookout fits most of my criteria for the perfect carry-on travel backpack; all for a great price as well. In this two-part series I discuss some of the features of this model (and the current model) of the Lookout with some comparisons to other packs I have reviewed. My review model of the Lookout features: – High-density polyethylene (HDPE) framesheet and a single aluminum stay (current model is also padded with mesh covered foam padding for softer/grippier support) – Panel-Loading design – Main compartment capacity of 40 liters (2441 cubic inches) in the Medium Size Pack (shown in review), 42 liters (2562 cubic inches) in the Large Size Pack – Front pocket with zippered compartment on inner flap – Soft cloth lined top stash pocket for fragile items like sunglasses (current model has larger pocket with bigger opening) – 2 side stretch-cloth/mesh pockets (current model uses regular mesh pockets) – 2 low-profile, expandable side pockets – 2 valuables pockets on the waistbelt (current model has a single, larger, zippered mesh pocket on right side of waist belt) – 2 ports for either right or left-handed hydration pouch use – Bottom compression straps can be used to also strap on gear such as sleeping bag/bedroll/etc. – Low-profile …

mdc.mo.gov Backpacking is a great way to get out into nature, but choosing the right backpack can be tough. Its a personal decision…but here are a few things to consider. Internal frame packs are better for long distance or off trail backpacking. They seal up better and hold the weight closer to your body to provide better balance. They can cost $150 to $500 for a good one, but are generally more comfortable to carry. External frame packs are less expensive 80 to 150 dollars. They offer a simple design with easy access to your gear and fewer adjustments…and since the frame holds the pack away from your body, its cooler to carry on hot days. Put your sleeping bag on the bottom, mid-weight items in the middle, and the heaviest items as high up and as close to your body as possible. Make sure hard-edged items dont poke at your back and leave things you may need during the day handy, on top or in side pouches. Dont forget the essentials: map…compass… water…extra food and clothing…a fire starter… matches…an army knife…a flashlight…a first aid kit… sunscreen and sunglasses. Regardless of style, bigger is not better. Backpacks are designed to ride comfortably when full and a half-empty big pack wont ride as well as a full small pack. A good pack doesnt rub or hurt or drag…it feels as if youre wearing it, not carrying it.

I’ve never seen a video review of a hunting bag, so I decided to make one. This particular bag is made by Halti, a Finnish brand. As far as I know, Beretta is another brand that produces hunting bags similar to this one. Hunting bags are extremely handy for actors because it comes with a stool, that can allow us to have a seat while waiting in between scenes. Unfortunately, unlike Hollywood studios, we do not have chairs provided on set, so this is extremely convenient.

PART 1 Every hiking trip is different in some way. That WAY will determine what to bring. For instance, if you’re in Florida in midsummer, you’ll bring lighter clothes and maybe not even a sleeping bag. If you live in Canada during the winter, you will want a lot heavier clothing. Here are some items to bring on a hike: Water Food Filter GPS Compass Map of area Knife Mess Kit First Aid Sleeping Bag Tent Whistle Flashlight Fire Maker Tinder Cell phone Watch Clothing Variations: Water (how much) Food (how much/what kind) Filter (do you need one) GPS (do you have one/ compass and map can be used) Mess kit (do you need to cook) Clothing (cold or hot/wet or dry/ length of hike) Tinder (can you make fire without it)
