Oftentimes when shopping we are so focused on certain name brands that we overlook the offerings of other companies. By happy accident I stumbled upon one of REI’s excellent backpacks: The Lookout. Extremely well-designed and low-profile, the Lookout fits most of my criteria for the perfect carry-on travel backpack; all for a great price as well. In this two-part series I discuss some of the features of this model (and the current model) of the Lookout with some comparisons to other packs I have reviewed. My review model of the Lookout features: – High-density polyethylene (HDPE) framesheet and a single aluminum stay (current model is also padded with mesh covered foam padding for softer/grippier support) – Panel-Loading design – Main compartment capacity of 40 liters (2441 cubic inches) in the Medium Size Pack (shown in review), 42 liters (2562 cubic inches) in the Large Size Pack – Front pocket with zippered compartment on inner flap – Soft cloth lined top stash pocket for fragile items like sunglasses (current model has larger pocket with bigger opening) – 2 side stretch-cloth/mesh pockets (current model uses regular mesh pockets) – 2 low-profile, expandable side pockets – 2 valuables pockets on the waistbelt (current model has a single, larger, zippered mesh pocket on right side of waist belt) – 2 ports for either right or left-handed hydration pouch use – Bottom compression straps can be used to also strap on gear such as sleeping bag/bedroll/etc. – Low-profile …
I have the same pack. There is a problem with the material as noted by other reviewers from REI’s website.
The nylon material frays. I’ve had to heat treat the frayed nylon a few times, but it keeps fraying. It doesn’t get caught on anything. The nylon just somehow naturally frays.
Will an iPhone fit in one of the pockets on the waistbelt? Thanks.
I to got this pack last year on sale. It is the best pack for urban survival. I travel every were and take my kids with me all the time. my Pack holds first aid kit, wipe, sun screen, insect repellent rain gear, poncho and liner, 550 cord, fire starter, water, compass, and I pod. I looked at 30 pack before buying this one. great pack. REI hit the mark with this pack.

In France there is a massive chain of sporting stores called Decathlon and they have own brand items under the Quechua brand. No one in France wants to pay top buck for branded products, but they still expect and insist on top quality. I am now converted to buying a majority of their own brand items, especially the back packs and light weight clothing, which are as good as any top name brand but at a fraction of the cost!
It’s certainly worth looking at own brands as a comparison!
lmfao “legitimate Coke”!!lol
I always do that! I read the reviews after I buy something, hoping that others liked it too.
