I stuffed some camping gear into some bike panniers and headed out for a weekend outing. Pedaled about 85 miles. It was kinda fun carrying everything you need for a few nights out under the stars and getting there literally on your own power.

I brought too many gadgets. I opted to bring my 2 person tent so that I could bring my gear inside the tent with me to protect it from the elements. Good thing since it rained the next morning. The drizzle on the tent fly is very soothing.

I can’t say enough good things about the MSR. Although one complaint I have is that the zipper on the open doors drag on the ground and can let dirt get caught in the zippers and tracked into your tent if not careful.

I’m going to bring a little less gear and try out the Big Agnes Seedhouse SL1 next time.

Basic main gear list:

Bike – Trek Valencia
Pannier rack bags – Trek Interchange II
Handlebar bag – Topeak
Tent – MSR Hubba Hubba 2 person tent with footprint
Sleeping bag – Kelty Lightyear 45 with Coolmax liner
Sleeping pad – Therm-A-Rest Trail Comfort
Stove – JetBoil PCS
Food – Freeze dried camping food for convenience and weight savings
Flashlight – Surefire E1E with F04 diffuser
Knife – Emerson CQC10
GPS – Garmin eTrex Vista and 60CSx

Video shot with Canon PowerShot S3IS.

I wasn’t deep enough in the wilderness or else I’d normally hang my food pack. This was in a developed campground, although I should have taken some precautions anyways.

hi quick question. On the inside of the tent are there loops were you could attach a gear loft? It looked like there were some in the video but I couldn’t tell. I am hoping to get the tent soon. Thanks

Yeah, I locked it to the tree. I hate having to leave it out in the elements. Luckily it only drizzled.

    I didn’t have that …
I didn’t have that much stuff to haul. Trailers can hold a lot, but handling suffers.

Also, I’ve heard issues with axles and wheels breaking, then you are really in trouble.

I still want to get a good trailer though.

I liked the movie. I think you did the right thing buying the best stuff and I am sure it served you well. I have one question, why did u choose panniers and not a trailer? I learned a lot from you. Thanks.

  • LEXPIX says:

    In pitch black …
In pitch black darkness, you really don’t need a lot of light once your eyes get night adapted. It throws a narrow beam for about 40 feet or so with plenty of spill. With the F04 diffuser, you get a nice, warm floody beam.

Just got the LX2 which really lets you reach out and touch someone in the darkness. LOL

    Great choice!

How do you like that Surefire? I have a 9P and a smaller 6P (I think).. considering one of those more compact models. How far does the beam project when you’re out in pitch of night?

You forgot 2 key pieces… 1) A BIKE REPAIR KIT.. nice to have when you go biking, and 2) A 1911 .45ACP.

Ok, you don’t really need the 1911, but it’s nice to know have a friend when you’re out alone.

  • LEXPIX says:

    You’re right. It …
You’re right. It does send that message, which I didn’t intend to. It’s just the equipment I had lying around. Less is more and all you really need is a tarp, water bottle and some snacks really.

  • frepi says:

    Nice video but it …
Nice video but it sends the signal that you need all this sophisticated stuff to go on a bike trip which isn’t true. I made multiple bike trips (14 days trips) without the titanium fork or dehydrated food. I had a naphtha stove (optimus) a 60 $ tent and ordinary food. No gps, no down sleeping bag, yet these were the most beautiful trips of my life.

Good point. The camera can be unwieldy. I now use the Canon SD780is mounted either on my helmet or chest mounted via flexible tripod connected to my backpack straps.

For his personal safety I also recommend using a Webbie Camcorder rather then the S3IS. The S3IS is a great camera, but a little dangerous to be holding while biking.
