En 1979 la Fuerza Aérea Argentina encargó tres helicópteros de una nueva versión designada 308 que fueron fabricados con requerimientos específicos. Los helicópteros Boeing Vertol CH-47C Chinook, H-91, H-92 y H-93 arribaron el 4 May ‘80. La historia operativa de los Chinook en la Fuerza Aérea es por demás emblemática, ya desde los comienzos. Fueron concebidos para ser empleados en la Antártida, y se los asignó a la VII Brigada Aérea para su operación. Para esos fines, volaron en dos campañas estivales completas en territorio antártico. Estos helicópteros comenzaron a ser leyenda en la historia de la FAA el 30 Nov ‘80, cuando dos de ellos, los H-91 y H-92, cruzaron en vuelo directo desde Río Grande (Tierra del Fuego) hasta la Base Aérea Marambio, siendo los primeros en unir en forma autónoma el territorio continental Sudamericano con el continente antártico. La leyenda de los Chinook de la FAA se sublimó en 1982, cuando los H-91 y H-93 fueron partícipes de la gerra de las Malvinas, desde donde regresaron bautizados con el fuego de la batalla con todos los honores. Lamentablemente, de los tres Chinook , uno se destruyó en un accidente en la Antártida, el H-92, y los dos remanentes, el H-91 y el H-93, con el pasar de los años, fueron perdiendo su capacidad operativa por falta de repuestos, quedando definitivamente en tierra.
