Tying knots is a skill that any camper has to have some knowledge on. If you don’t, you’re in luck! In the first of many special episodes on tying different knots, big daddy Tony Heck shows how to tie a Bowline knot. What’s your favorite knot? I’m not gonna cook it, but I’ll order it from Zanzibar. I rarely seem to ever get a good night’s sleep while camping. I’ve got a comfortable air mattress and a giant tent. My sleeping bag isn’t great so that might be the problem, but it isn’t as if I’m always cold. Are there tricks to getting a good night’s sleep when camping?

Hammock sleeping is about the most comfortable and restful nights and naps I have ever ever ever had. (note: ever! hahha) The gentle sway, there is nothing poking up at you or pressing in on your back or hipbones, plus you are not worried about being on the ground with all the critters.

Note this is a parachute nylon hammock, often referred to as a camping or travel hammock. They are not made of rope (which I find really uncomfortable to lay on). You lay in them at an angle to keep them open, otherwise they kind of close in on you like a pea pod. Camping hammocks don’t have spreader bars in them so they are very very hard to tip. These roll up into a ball the size of about a grapefruit, and they are so easy to carry. They are also very very quick dry. Perfect for use under a tarp.

I sleep better in a hammock than I do my own bed. And I have a very nice bed! Not only that, when I am not sleeping, I can literally feel myself relaxing in a hammock, as in, I breathe easier, my pains go away, my heart rate slows down, my head clears out. This is a feat because I am pretty high strung. I just love love them.

You do want to make sure no matter what your sleeping arrangements are, that you are prepared for the weather. Also make sure you have a bug net if you need it. If it is hot out, you can stay comfortable by wetting your head, or sleep with a wet bandanna on your forehead, and maybe apply something cool to your skin like Gold Bond powder or sponge bathe with some Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap. Hammocks are ideal in hot weather because you can get air all around you.

If it is cold, you absolutely do not want to be wet at all! Have a high calorie (high fat, high sugar) just before bed, and make sure you have adequate sleeping bag. If you need to boost it, you can add a layer outside, maybe a poncho. You can also stuff your bag with extra clothing around your body, esp your feet. Don’t wear the clothing. The less you wear to bed, the better your sleeping bag will be able to do it’s job of collecting your body heat. so…light layers or maybe just a pair of long johns, thin socks or bare feet.

Either way, stay hydrated all day by drinking plenty of water but stop your liquids about 2 hours before bedtime so you aren’t up peeing all night. This really sucks in the cold or the rain.

Also make sure you have addressed everything that you can that may have been cause for distraction or concern. Is your food secure? Is your fire out? Did you call home? Do you have a plan for tomorrow? Did you pee? Are you fresh and clean? These things affect sleep!
